Mentor of the Month: Isaac Wilson – December 2017

BBBSMMC   |   December 22, 2017

Having a strong, positive relationship between Big and Little is an important quality that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth and Middlesex Counties looks for in all their matches. This month, we are featuring a Big and Little match that has been together for over four years, Isaac Wilson and his Little Brother Karon.

Karon was matched with his Big Brother Isaac at just 7 years old. Karon and Isaac enjoy activities of all kinds including roller skating, attending sporting events, tubing, and visiting the circus. Isaac also introduced Karon to tennis, which developed into a sport Karon now enjoys to play.

In a recent conversation with case manager Marybeth from BBBSMMC, she explained, “What I like most about Isaac and Karon’s relationship is that they are never afraid to try new activities together. They are consistent and truly enjoy being with one another. I can see their friendship lasting a lifetime.”

Karon’s mother praised Isaac for always being willing to introduce Karon to new activities and experiences that he may never have tried before meeting him. When his case manager asked Karon why he wants to continue in his friendship with Isaac, Karon replied, “Isaac is fun, knows my personality and understands me. He is always making me laugh too.”

Recently, we spoke with Isaac to find out a little more about why he became a mentor and what he has learned from being part of the program.

What prompted you to want to become a Big?

After I took some time off from a community organization that provided different positive programs for young people, I decided it was time to find some way to make a difference in a young person life. I found that becoming a Big for BBBSMMC would be a great fit for me.

How long have you been participating in the program for?

I have participated in the program for 6 years, Karon is my second little.

What has been rewarding about being a Big?

Seeing a young person grow and mature before your eyes and helping in that process.

What has been your favorite outing with your Little?

A couple of my favorite outings with Karon have been going to see a rodeo and the circus.

How do you feel your relationship has impacted your Little?

My little has become more confident in his abilities and more outgoing in his relation with others. I’m proud of that.

What has it been like to work with BBBSMMC?

The experience has been great. They are willing to provide you with the help and advice needed to work with your little.
