Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties’ goal has always been to make a positive difference in the lives of at-risk children by providing them with 1-to-1 mentoring relationships. There is no doubt that creating these relationships and giving these children role models has a hugely positive impact – but so much more has been manifested from these matches. Meet Matt and Antonio, whose relationship is just one example of a Big/Little match that has grown into a forever friendship.
Matt and Antonio were matched in 2000 when Antonio was just 7 years old. Antonio never knew his father, so his mother turned to BBBS for a male mentor for her son. Together, the pair has gone on many adventures over the last 17 years; exploring museums, visiting train exhibits, going out to eat and even just going to the movies. Matt has attended many of Antonio’s band and choir performances and countless sporting events.
Antonio comments that Matt, “teaches me good values” and that he always “sets a good example.” He also shared that Matt is an outgoing, witty and caring role model. Recently, Matt cheered Antonio on as he graduated from SUNY Maritime which was his top choice of colleges. He is now working in New York City as a Solutions Development Engineer at Pearl Street LED Lighting Systems.
